Cattle Producers Gather at National Farmers Union Meeting in Swift Current
The National Farmers Union made a special presentation on Tuesday to a group of local farmers about the current state of the cattle market. A key issue and major concern to many local producers surrounded captive supply. This means beef packing corporations also own or control cattle on feed or finished cattle, which is an increasing issue because packers are becoming their own suppliers and competing with feeders and farmers who are also trying to sell finished cattle to supply packing plants.
Director of Research at the National Farmers Union Darrin Qualman says unless something is done to stop captive supply, packers will take away the producers selling power.
